Nora Brown is a finalist in the SUNY Chancellor’s Distinguished Dissertation Awards

Nora BrownNora Brown was awarded as a finalist in the Chancellor’s Distinguished Dissertation Awards for her dissertation Function and evolution of seminal fluid components in Drosophila.  Nora received her PhD in August 2023 and was mentored by Mariana Wolfner and Andrew Clark.  Nora was also featured in the Graduate School website.

Donald Long

Donald Long awarded HHMI Gilliam Fellowship

Donald LongDonald Long (Class of 2019) has been awarded a Gilliam Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).  This program seeks to increase a more diverse community of scientific researchers and is awarded to people who will become leaders in science and will actively support that goal.  Don is mentored by Praveen Sethupathy in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Alaa Farghli receives the 2023 Excellence in Leadership Award

Alaa Farghli received the 2023 Excellence in Leadership Award at the 2023 Graduate Diversity & Inclusion Awards and Recognition Celebration. This award honors Alaa’s demonstrated consistent and sustained ability to improve the graduate and professional student experience through leadership activities.

Jessica Maya awarded American Association of Immunologists 2023 Travel Grant

Jessica Maya (Class of 2017) was awarded a 2023 Immunology Travel Grant from the American Association of Immunologists.  Jessica is mentored by Maureen Hanson.

Jaclyn Bubnell awarded 2023 Wellnitz Prize for a Paper by a GGD Student

Jaclyn Bubnell awarded 2023 Wellnitz Prize for a Paper by a GGD Student.  Her paper “Functional Divergence of the bag-of-marbles Gene in the Drosophila melanogaster Species Group” was published in teh June 17, 2022 edition of Molecular Biology and Evolution.  Jaclyn graduated in December 2020 and currently is a postdoc in the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics, lab of Chip Aquadro.

John Frank awarded 2023 2023 LPS GGD Best Paper Award

John Frank’s first author research paper entitled “Evolution and Antiviral Activity of a Human Protein of Retroviral Origin” was recognized LPS Best Paper of the Year by a graduate student in the field of Genetics, Genomics & Development (GGD). John’s paper was published in the October 27, 2022 issue of Science.  John is mentored by Cedric Feschotte.

Miwa Wenzel receives 2023 CALS Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award

Miwa Wenzel (Class of 2016) was awarded the CALS Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award for her role in TAing BIOMG 2801: Laboratory in Genetics and Genomics.

Jackie Bubnell appointed to Diversity Committee of GSA Early Career Scientist Leadership Program
